PMD to construct leading-edge shipyard and upkeep facility at Takoradi Port

Top Meridian Docks Ghana Restricted, a completely Ghanaian Corporate, is about to construct a contemporary send restore and upkeep facility on the Takoradi Port.

The undertaking contains civil works and the procurement of a floating dry dock. The civil works comes to the dredging of a pocket for the floating dock and the turning basin to-14m and -11m respectively, the development of a jetty of 200 meters, a fitting-out quay facility that gives as much as 400 meters of berthing house and the advance of a few 18,000 sq. meters of lay-down house and land-based workshop facility.

On the sod chopping of Top Meridian Docks (PMD) Floating Dry Dock and Send Upkeep Facility via President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Managing Director of Top Meridian Docks Restricted, Stanley Ahorlu, recalled pronouncing: “In 2014, we got here to GPHA and stated, we wish to clear up an issue and so they requested, what the issue is? We realised that it used to be taking rather so much on vessel homeowners of West Africa to provider and handle their ships and that each one of them had been leaving the West Coast of the Gulf of Guinea to Las Palmas Spain, Southern Africa, amongst others’.

In line with him, it takes about 21 days to get to Las Palmas to fix a boat, and the associated fee is rather prohibitive, given that the quality-of-service provide alongside West Africa does no longer meet expectation of the send homeowners.

He defined that the usual send homeowners pass to fix yards for 3 causes; and those are, high quality requirements, value and proximity.

“So at the foundation of this, we stated to ourselves, there’s a marketplace and we will supply an answer. The answer we got here up with is a boat restore facility proper again in Takoradi, which is rather frankly, an excessively central level to place a boat restore facility particularly when it’s been situated via executive and the oil and gasoline products and services hub of West Africa,” he elaborated.

The solution, in line with Mr. Ahorlu is just to construct a facility with a spec of 40,000 sq. meters of touchdown house.

“We’re reclaiming the ocean 40,000 sq. meters, a jetty of 250 meters. A 13,500-tonne raise capability floating dry dock shall be newly built and can have the ability to servicing ships of 200 meters Duration Total (LOA)” he stated.

He stated it has taken PMD 8 years to get to this degree and when the undertaking is whole, it will create 200 new jobs and about 300 informal jobs.

The power, Mr. Ahorlu stated, is projected to boost earnings of about U$14 million a 12 months and this can be a recreation changer for the area, the rustic in addition to West Africa.

This section of the undertaking is estimated at US$137 million funded via PMD, personal fairness traders and building finance establishments. The shipyard facility is hoped-for to be operational in fourth quarter of 2024.
